JESUS SPEAKING
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6: 19 – 21)
FAITHFUL THOUGHTS
Simply put, Jesus is instructing His followers to seek after the things that are truly valuable. Expensive possessions fade away and money disappears, but the love we show toward others is eternal. Christianity is therefore less focused on things and far more focused on people; seeking out the lost and caring for those we might encounter.
Interestingly enough, death has a remarkable way of revealing what is truly valuable in life. Those who are approaching death, whether from old age or some disease, are often forced to look back upon their lives in a meaningful manner. They are quick to discover what was actually valuable and what wasn’t. No one on their death bed, except a delusional person, will ever say, ‘Boy I wish I had made more money,’ or ‘I’m angry because I didn’t get that promotion.’ No, instead they express regret for not spending enough time with their wives, their children, or even their closest friends and relatives. Some are even driven to make amends for the harms they have caused others.
Over the course of a lifetime, some will acquire many possessions, and yet people are far more important. The love we show toward others is eternal; a treasure that will never fade away; kept for us in heaven. May we avoid useless distractions and selfish endeavors; and instead remain focused on loving God and our fellows.
“Lord Heavenly Father, reveal to our hearts what is truly valuable in this life. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, may we put people ahead of possessions and always strive to love others. May all of our works be a reflection of Your goodness. We love You Father, we praise You, and we thank You, and we ask and pray all of these things, according to Your will, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.” God bless all of you!
