Do Everything as Unto the Lord

JESUS SPEAKING

“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much, and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust true riches? And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own?” (Luke 16: 10 – 12)

INSPIRED THOUGHTS

The earthly possessions imparted to mankind by God ultimately serve an eternal purpose. Those who utilize their skills and talents to further the gospel and serve others in the present, will inherit eternal life; the ultimate reward for their faithfulness. Those who are unable to serve their families, their neighbors, and their earthly employers with passion, zeal, and diligence will never be permitted to serve God in His Kingdom. We read in Colossians, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”

As the story goes, a man once wandered the streets of Philidalphia searching for employment. A well-known business man named Mr. Girard offered him a day’s labor. The man was tasked with hauling a pile of bricks from one end of the yard to the other. The man showed up early and worked heartily without complaint. The next day he was hired to return the bricks to their original location. He was paid to repeat this mundane objective for over a week, until it was evident that he could be trusted to do exactly what he was told. Mr. Girard soon promoted him to a more lucrative position as a purchasing agent; granting him the authority to buy items on behalf of his employer.

Like this wayward man, we too have been given a task to accomplish; to serve others with divine passion and supernatural affection. To preach the gospel through our words and deeds, so that others might be drawn to Christ and receive salvation. We must obey our employers, serve our families, and do everything “as to the Lord.” Those who can be trusted to handle the smallest tasks, will enter God’s Kingdom, and be given eternal responsibilities.

“Lord Heavenly Father, may we serve our fellows in the same manner in which we serve You. May we be diligent to accomplish even the most menial of tasks with great zeal. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and guide our hearts and minds, so that the entire world might observe Your goodness in and through us. We love You Father, we praise You, and we thank You, and we ask and pray all of these things according to You will, in Jesus Christ’s name, amen.” God bless all of you!

A Servant’s Heart

JESUS SPEAKING

    But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.  However, it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.  And whoever desires to be first shall be slave of all.  For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10: 42 – 45)

INSPIRED THOUGHTS

    As children we are taught that dominance is better than submission, and that a higher social status leads to a better life.  Many therefore seek to acquire positions of great power and authority.  Yet Christ’s teachings are often in direct opposition to such worldly principles.  Those who follow Jesus must deny what they have been taught, in order to embrace the doctrines of genuine faith and divine humility.  Only by abandoning the desire for greatness, can one completely and lovingly serve others. [Note: This does not mean you need to quit your job or stop seeking a higher wage or position. However, we must always be humble, no matter our station in life.]

    For years young men from across the country have flocked to the church where I was saved, seeking to begin a career in pastoral ministry. Many new hopefuls were initially referred to a pastor named Romain, who skillfully employed a special technique designed to separate the qualified from the unqualified.  As the prospects approached, he would hand them a broom and tell them to go sweep a portion of the church.  Although many were obedient, others felt insulted and became upset.  One common response sounded something like this, “I came here to be a pastor and to teach the bible, not to sweep floors.”  Upon hearing such a retort, Pastor Romain knew then that they did not have a servant’s heart; they had not come to serve and to practice humility, but rather to acquire power and authority.

    Those who follow the Son of God must give-up the desire for worldly greatness in order to pursue lowliness and humility.  Seeking to serve others rather than to be served, we become the men and women God has called us to be.  We can serve at home, in the community, at work, and in our church.  We can serve our family members, coworkers, friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers.  Only through selflessness and sacrifice can we be transformed into the image of our great Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.     

    “Lord Heavenly Father, inspire us to seek lowliness and humility.  May we hunger to love and serve others in sincerity and singleness of heart.  Provide us with opportunities to place the needs of our fellows ahead of our own, that we might be examples of Your great mercy and everlasting affection.  We love You Father, we praise You, and we thank You, and we ask and pray all of these things, according to Your will, in Jesus Christ’s name.  Amen.”  God bless all of you!

Being Prepared for Christ’s Return

JESUS SPEAKING

        Then Peter said to him, “Lord do you speak this parable only to us, or to all people?” And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers” (Luke 12: 42-46.)

INSPIRED THOUGHTS

        Before ascending into heaven Jesus promised to return. He used a wedding parable to illustrate His second coming. When the master of a household left to attend a wedding, the exact moment of his return was uncertain. The master in this story represents Jesus. The servant placed over the master’s household represents the disciples whom He left behind to care for His church. Today, within the body of Christ there are new leaders in positions of authority. Some are just and wise stewards, while others have become impatient with Christ’s return and have chosen to mistreat God’s people and to live in sin. When Christ does return, He will reward those who have been faithful, and He will punish those who have failed to serve in the absence of their master.
        In the United States, a new industry known as ‘mystery shopping’ has become quite popular. Most employers find it beneficial to tour their own facilities; to evaluate their products, procedures, equipment, and especially their employees. Employees however, do not act naturally when their bosses are present; they tend to ‘put on a show;’ they work harder and more efficiently; they become more polite and positive toward the customers and other staff members. This effect makes it nearly impossible for managers and owners to accurately evaluate their workers. In turn, many employers are now hiring people to pretend that they are customers; as they shop, they are secretly evaluating the employees. And then, when the employees become aware that the owner is using mystery shoppers, it causes them to maintain a higher level of performance in the work place.
        Many purported Christians today have become slack, because their master is not present; but Jesus can return at any moment. A lack of faith in His second coming will lead to increased sin, and unrighteous living. To avoid disobedience, we must constantly expect His arrival; every second, of every hour, of every day. We must never lose hope; but rather trust in His promises. As we wait, it is our duty to continue to serve and love our fellows. When He does return, those who were faithful in His absence will receive eternal blessings and everlasting life.
        “Lord Heavenly Father, may our hearts be expectant as we continue to hope in Your return. Increase our faith that we might forever trust in Your promises. May we always desire to serve You and our fellows. Guide and direct our steps, that we may know with certainty, the duties and responsibilities that You have given to each us. We love You Father, we praise You, and we thank You, and we ask and pray all of these things, according to Your will, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.” God bless all of you!
